Description
SUMMARY The printers, who are considered the aristocracy of the labour class because of their high level of qualification and education, exercise a trade that is appreciated by the society of the time. Moreover, socialization is central to the life of this group of workers; they voluntarily join together in associations and various social activities. The printers of the city of Quebec make no exception to this rule. Proud of their trade, they unite and found a society, participate in different social activities in the city such as those surrounding Saint-Jean-Baptiste, create a theatre company, organise musical societies, and estabilish a newsroom and a library for their members. These activities are central to the labour culture of this group of workers, a culture which helped them unite and define themselves. Through the description of the social and cultural activities of the Societe typographique de Quebec's members between 1836 and 1872, this paper aims to show, on the one hand, how the printers actively participated in the promotion of a culture of the book and, on the other, how these activities helped reinforce the spirit of solidarity that allowed them to defend their professional interests.
